Capturing the Light
The "Eye of Benagil" creates a natural spotlight effect that changes throughout the day.
The Golden Hour: 10:00 - 12:00
When the sun is directly overhead, the light beams hit the sand, creating the iconic contrast. This is the "money shot".
Gear Tip
The cave is massive. Bring a Wide Angle Lens (16mm or wider) or use 0.5x mode on iPhone to capture the full dome.
Choosing Your Vessel
Since you cannot swim, you must choose a tour. Keep in mind that all kayak tours must now be guided.

Pros:

- Enter smaller hidden caves
- Eco-friendly & quiet
Cons:
- Physically demanding
- Must stay with guide (2026 Rule)
- You will get wet
Small Boat Tour
Pros:
- See more coastline (Marinha)
- Comfortable seating
- Good for all ages
Cons:
- Cannot enter deep inside
- Short time at cave mouth
- Engine noise
20 Million Years in the Making
Benagil is a "karst" formation primarily made of Miocene limestone. Over millions of years, rainwater dissolved the limestone from above while ocean waves eroded it from below. Eventually, the ceiling collapsed, creating the famous "Algar" (sinkhole) that floods with light today.
How to Get to Benagil Cave from Faro Airport
Benagil cave is 55 km from Faro Airport, approximately 45-50 minutes by car. There is no direct public transport. The most practical route:
Faro Airport → Carvoeiro
