Beyond the beaches lies another Algarve. Ancient cascades hidden in mountain forests and river valleys, waiting to be discovered.
Tavira
🏊 Swimming OKThe most famous waterfall in the Algarve. "Hell's Pool" features a 15-meter cascade plunging into a deep emerald pool surrounded by lush vegetation. The dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water make it a photographer's dream.
10-minute walk from parking. Trail is easy but can be slippery.
Winter to Spring (December-May) for strongest flow
Photo Tip: Golden hour light creates magical colors on the rock face.
Monchique
Hidden in the Monchique mountains, this secluded waterfall tumbles through ancient woodland. The journey is as beautiful as the destination, winding through cork oak forests.
30-minute hike through forest trails. Moderate difficulty.
Late winter/early spring for best water volume
Photo Tip: Use a wide angle to capture the forest cathedral feel.
Monchique
An iron-rich spring waterfall with distinctive reddish rocks. The mineral water was once believed to have healing properties. A peaceful spot away from tourist crowds.
Short walk from road. Easy access suitable for families.
Year-round, but best after winter rains
Photo Tip: The iron stains create unique abstract patterns.
Alte
In one of the Algarve's prettiest traditional villages, this waterfall feeds ancient washing tanks. The combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage is unique.
Walk through Alte village. Very easy access.
Spring for wildflowers, winter for waterfall
Photo Tip: Frame the waterfall with the traditional white village buildings.
Combine waterfalls with traditional villages and mountain views. Our suggested route covers the best of inland Algarve in one day.
Suggested Route:
Faro → Alte → Monchique → Pego do Inferno → Tavira
Pego do Inferno is the main swimming waterfall. The pool is deep and cold even in summer. Other waterfalls are primarily for viewing as the pools are shallow or access is restricted.
Winter and spring (December to May) see the strongest water flow after rainfall. Summer months often reduce waterfalls to a trickle or dry them completely.
Drive to the village of Cachopo near Tavira. There's a small parking area and a 10-minute easy trail to the waterfall. We offer transfer services from any Algarve location.

"Absolutely brilliant service. We were delayed by 2 hours and the driver was still there smiling. The car seat for my 2-year-old was spotlessly clean. Highly recommend."

"Efficient and professional. The driver spoke excellent English and gave us great tips for restaurants in Albufeira. Much better than the Uber lottery."

"Booked a return transfer to Lagos. Driver was on time for the 4am pickup. The Mercedes van was highly comfortable. Will use again next year."
